Abstract

784,571. Electric digital-data-storage apparatus. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. March 17, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 9162/54. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] I A magnetic drum recorder, Fig. 1, for storing digital data, comprises a bell-shaped member 32 having a central vertical spindle 47 mounted rotatably in a fixed tubular shaft 38, and is driven by an electric motor having its stator 43 on the fixed tubular shaft and its rotor 44 secured to the bell. The weight of the bell is supported by a main bearing 48, a spring 39 having a steadying effect only, and the speed of the bell is controlled by electromagnetic brakes 45 fixed to the base-plate 41, which also includes a circumferential groove 42 for supporting stacks of reading and writing heads.
