Abstract
783,881. Stuffing-box substitutes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 4, 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6526/54. Class 122 (5). A seal between relatively movable parts such as a shaft 1 and bearing housing 7 is provided by a permanent or electromagnet 6 the poles or attached pole pieces 8, 9 of the magnets being spaced only a few thousandths of an inch from the shaft and these spaces being filled with a magnetic fluid which is kept rigid by the magnetic field. The magnetic fluid comprises finely divided materials including magnetic particles in grease or oil and may be as described in Specification 756,563, [Group XXXV]. The pole pieces may be bevelled to concentrate the magnetic field towards their centre-lines or they may have peripheral slots embracing collars on the shaft so that centrifugal and magnetic forces on the fluid are combined. A graded pressure difference between the inside and outside of a seal may be provided by maintaining a partial vacuum or pressure between the pole pieces or by providing several spaced units in series and maintaining a partial vacuum or pressure between the several pole pieces or in the spaces between the units. For sealing two relatively rotatable flanged tubes 21, 22, Fig. 6, the pole pieces 25, 26 are radially spaced. Where both parts to be sealed are non-magnetic, a magnetic section may be fitted to one part. The magnet may be a flat plate with semi-circular pole pieces through which a shaft passes. As well as gases, the seal is effective against leakage of liquids that are not a solvent of the grease or oil in the magnetic fluid.
