783,705. Cutting tubes transversely. OIL FEED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 17, 1954], No. 27011/54. Class 31 (1). Apparatus for preparing the end of hose H having an embedded reinforcement R by removing the outer hose material to expose the reinforcement comprises a body part 1 having a plug 2 for receiving the end of the hose and a cutting tool 7 which, as the body part and hose are turned relatively to one another and the hose is forced on to the plug, forms a peripheral cut in the outer hose material to enable it to be removed: The cutting tool is adjustably clamped in the head 6 of a rod 5 which is adjustably clamped in an extension 4 of the body part 1. The plug 2 has a head portion 2<SP>1</SP> which is removably clamped in the body part 1; this enables the plug to be replaced by other plugs having head portions of the same diameter and shank portions 2<SP>2</SP> of different diameters to suit the bore diameters of the various hoses. Each plug may be formed with a mark 13 to facilitate the setting of the longitudinal position of the rod 5 and hence of the cutting edge 8. The radial position of the cutting tool can be set by means of a detachable sleeve 12 having an external diameter corresponding to the hose diameter. In a modification, the body part has a recess to receive the end of the hose, the body part having, intersecting the recess, an opening which is arranged to receive a radiallyadjustable cutter. To adapt such a construction for different hose diameters, a series of sleeves each having a closed base is provided, the sleeves having the same external diameter to fit in the recess in the body part and having different internal diameters to suit different hose diameters.
