Abstract

783,517. Casting-processes. MANNESMANN AKT.-GES. Feb. 17, 1954 [May 7, 1953; Aug. 5, 1953], No. 4715/54. Class 83 (1). In a continuous-casting process, when the speed of descent of the casting is increased the rate of cooling along the whole length of the casting containing the liquid core is maintained constant or increased simultaneously with, but by an amount which is less than proportional to, the increase of speed of descent; or when the speed of descent of the casting is decreased the rate of cooling along the whole of the casting containing the liquid core is simultaneously decreased by an amount which is more than proportional to the decrease of speed of descent of the casting. The process is said to avoid porosity in the core of the casting. The operation may be carried out with constant cooling along said length with a constant or increasing speed of descent. Alternatively if both speed of descent and rate of cooling are varied, a lessthan proportional increase of the cooling rate takes place simultaneously with an increasing speed of descent, or an over-proportional decrease in cooling rate takes place simultaneously with a decreasing speed of descent. Shaking or vibrations may be produced by manually or mechanically driven beater or shaker devices, vibrators, sonic or ultrasonic appliances, &c.
