Abstract
783,096. Braiding. JARDINE, C. B. Sept. 14, 1954 [Sept. 21, 1953], No. 26536/54. Class 74 (1). A braiding machine yarn spool 10 is prevented from rotating until a supply of yarn is required, and is then permitted to rotate only to a predetermined extent, regardless of the speed at which the machine is operating. Yarn from the spool, rotating with a tube 5, is led up through an eye 19 on a tension post 11, down under a hook 20a on a slide 20 and up through an eye 15 to the braiding point. As yarn is taken up by the movement of the bobbin carriers, slide 20 rises, against the action of a spring 13, until it engages a loop 32 of a rod 31 which, in rising, raises the free end of a lever 24, to bring a lug 25 on the lever into the path of the teeth of an escapement wheel 8 fast with the tube 5, and also lifts a stop 33, which it carries at its lower end, out. of engagement with a tooth of the escapement wheel. The wheel is then free to rotate counterclockwise, Fig. 4, under the pull of the thread until a tooth drops on to and is arrested by the lug 25. The yarn tension having thus been eased, the slide 20 descends again, the rod 31 and lever 24 fall, to locate stop 33 in the path of the wheel teeth and that tooth of the wheel 8 which had been arrested by the lug 25, passes over it (for this purpose, pushing down the lever 24 beyond its normal rest position against the action of a light leaf spring 26 or helical spring) and comes to rest against the stop 33. The lug 25 now rises behind the tooth, which is thus locked by it and the stop 33 against rotation of the wheel and either direction. Wings 21 on slide 20 operate a stop motion if the yarn breaks. The tube 5 is retained endwise on the supporting post 3 by springs 4 and the spool is constrained to rotate with the tube 5 by resilient wire members 7.
