Abstract

Foamed polystyrene is prepared by extruding at 280 DEG to 450 DEG F a composition of polystyrene particles with four and a half to nine per cent of an aliphatic hydrocarbon of boiling range 30-90 DEG C., homogeneously admixed with a carbon dioxide-liberating agent and an organic acid having at least 3.0 milli-equivalents of acidic hydrogen per gram, an acid salt or boric acid in an amount to produce upon reaction a total of from one-tenth to five per cent, based on the polystyrene particles containing the aliphatic hydrocarbon, of water and carbon dioxide. The polystyrene may be of the high impact type, i.e. containing elastomers. The hydrocarbon may be petroleum ether, particularly the pentane and/or hexane fractions. A number of acids is listed. The carbon dioxide-liberating agent may be a carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkaline earth metal. The products may have a density of up to 20 lbs. per cubic foot. Flame-retardant products may be produced by addition of highly halogenated non-volatile hydrocarbons and antimony trioxide. Specification 777,384 is referred to.
