In a power-assisted hydraulic braking apparatus in which a continuously circulating hydraulic braking system is separated from a static hydraulic braking system by means of the master cylinder piston and is adapted to be interrupted in the space behind the piston by means of a manually operable valve member, fluid pressure balance is maintained between the two systems in the inoperative state through an axial passage in the piston, the passage being closed by the valve member in the operation of the apparatus. In the embodiment illustrated, a master cylinder 1 is introduced in a fluid pressure circulating system wherein a pump P draws fluid from container B, through connection 9 disposed above the piston 2 of the master cylinder 1, through passage 11 between the plunger or manually operable valve member 3 and the valve cap 8 into plunger duct 4 and connection 12 back to the container B. Prior to braking a preliminary pressure is produced in space 10 by means of the circulatory system and is transferred via apertures 7 in the valve cap 8, through valve passage 6 into space 13 and thus to the static braking system 14. When the plunger 3 is displaced towards piston 2 the plunger duct 4 and the valve passage 6 are closed by the plunger 3 seating against the valve cap 8, a pressure is built up in space 10 and piston 2 is displaced. Increased pressure on the foot pedal is necessary to maintain the plunger 3 closed against the valve cap 8 and further displacement of the master cylinder piston 2 and plunger 3 increases pressure in the braking system.
