782,652. Extracting sugar beet. HEINRICH, K. Jan. 5, 1953 [Jan. 3, 1952; March 5, 1952; July 29, 1952; Dec. 17, 1952], No. 12793/55. Divided out of 782,651. Class 127. A process for the extraction by liquid of sugar from sugar beet cossettes in a continuous manner involving heating of the cossettes before their transference to a diffusion apparatus comprises conveying fresh cossettes from an inlet to an outlet of a closed trough by means of a rotating screw, the spaces in the trough being completely filled, and passing extraction liquid from the diffusion apparatus through the cossettes in the trough transversely to their direction of movement, through a filter screen into a chamber extending the full length of the trough, withdrawing from the chamber the liquid of sugar concentration so increased, heating it, passing some of the heated liquid transversely through the cossettes in the central region of the trough, through the filter screen and into the chamber, and passing the rest of the heated liquid transversely through the fresh cossettes entering the trough, through the filter screen into a separate compartment of the chamber, and withdrawing liquid from the separate compartment. With the apparatus of Figs. 1, 2 and 9, which comprises an enclosed arrangement of a trough and a rotatable tubular sieve extending over the length of the trough and divided by a partition R into portions H<SP>1</SP> and H<SP>2</SP>, a mixture of finely cut beet cossettes supplied from a hopper S<SP>1</SP> and hot extraction liquid supplied from a pipe j is converted to a mash in section N of the trough by rotating arms U, is conveyed in section O of the trough by a rotating worm, is stirred in section P of the trough by rotating arms W, and is taken from the section P to the diffusion apparatus, e.g. is pumped by a pump 100 through a pipe C to the apparatus of Specification 782,651. Extraction liquid from the diffusion apparatus, e.g. juice conveyed in a pipe J from the apparatus of Specification 782,651, enters the section P of the trough at G and flows through the mash therein, the greater part of such liquid passing into the portion H<SP>1</SP> of the tubular sieve; liquid is withdrawn by a pump 101 from the portion H<SP>1</SP> and is heated at 108, a part of the heated liquid is passed by a pipe D<SP>1</SP> through a port D of the worm section O of the trough to plasmolize the mash therein, and a part is heated further at 107 and passed into the pipe J. Liquid passing from the section N of the trough into the portion H<SP>2</SP> of the tubular sieve is taken off by a pipe 105a for sugar manufacture. The tubular sieve is cleaned by strippers U<SP>1</SP> as it rotates.
