Abstract

Aluminium fluoride is produced by reacting at elevated temperature an aqueous aluminium hydroxide slurry and a 5-15 per cent by weight solution of fluosilicic acid. Preferably the silicic acid is present as an 8-12 per cent by weight solution in the initial reaction mixture. Preferred temperatures are 80-100 DEG C., and at these temperatures stoichiometrical quantities of the reactants should preferably be used: at lower temperatures, e.g. 60-75 DEG C., excess aluminium hydroxide is preferred. After reaction the mixture is filtered to remove silica, preferably at or near the reaction temperature. In order to crystallize b -AIF3.3H2O from the filtrate, the pH may be adjusted to 2.0-3.0 and the solution stirred vigorously at 80-100 DEG C. under reflux for a long period, e.g. 20 hours. The molten liquor may be used to wash the silica precipitate. a -AlF3.3H2O and AlF3.9H2O may be obtained by low-temperature crystallization but are metastable at 0-100 DEG C.
