Abstract

Granular detergent compositions are produced by forming a flowable paste from (a) a granulating agent (which may be a non-ionic detergent) consisting of a polar organic compound having alcoholic hydroxyl as the only terminal polar radical and a molecular weight of about 150 or greater; (b) water; and (c) an alkali-metal inorganic salt in a hydratable form, present in a quantity sufficient to take up substantially all the water as water of hydration. The paste is mixed and aerated until semi-solid nodules have formed, and is then quiescently aged to produce a rigid friable mass of coherent, apparently dry, spheroidal agglomerate granules. Compounds suitable as granulating agents include the polyalkylene glycols and polyglycerols and their derivatives, such as their mono-alkyl ethers and thioethers, alkylphenol monoethers and monoesters of fatty acids, alkanolamides of fatty acids, fatty alcohols and polymeric alcohols such as polyvinyl alcohol. It is preferred to use the surface-active polyoxyethylene condensates from hydrophobic compounds containing at least about 8 carbon atoms, the condensates containing 6-30 ethenoxy groups per molecule, such as the alkyl phenol or tall oil condensates. Examples of the alkali metal salts to be used are sodium and potassium sulphates, sodium carbonate, sesquicarbonate and bicarbonate, lithium perchlorate, borates such as lithium metaborate and sodium perborate, and phosphates such as pentasodium tripolyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and mono-, di-and tri-sodium and lithium orthophosphates, all of which form stable hydrates at room temperature. It is preferred to use Type II pentasodium tripolyphosphate and soda ash in ratios of from 1:4 to 4:1. The ratio of alkali-metal salt to non-ionic detergent is usually between 35:1 to 2:1, and the ratio of alkali metal salt to water is generally between 8:1 and 2:1. The compositions may also contain 3-14 per cent of sodium silicate, and may also include anionic detergents. Such optional additives as dyes, pigments, foam or detergency improvers, sequestering agents, foam depressants, wetting agents, water-treating agents, bleaches, corrosion inhibitors or anti-redeposition agents may also be included.
