Abstract

781,466. Jet propulsion plant. HUNTING PERCIVAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. June 27, 1955 [March 30, 1954], No. 9325/54. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A gaseous jet reaction nozzle for the propulsion, lift, or control of aircraft comprises a smooth continuous duct 11, Fig. 1, having at one end a pair of diverging walls 12, 13 and a wedge-shaped diverting member 16 having its apex directed towards the duct, so as to divide the duct outlet into two diverging nozzles through which the flow is diverted, said member being arranged for movement towards and away from said walls to vary the relative sizes of the nozzles and hence the value and/or direction of the thrust. The member 16 is supported in Fig. 1 by two parallel links 22 fixed to shafts 23 supported by fixed structure 24. A lever 28 is secured to one shaft 23 as a control. In Fig. 4, there are two members 30, 31 adapted to divide the duct outlet into a central nozzle and two diverging side nozzles. The members are supported by parallel links 35, 36 on pivots 37, 38, and are shown in full lines in the position in which maximum thrust is developed, and are shown shaded and in chain lines in the position in which minimum thrust is developed.
