Abstract

781,410. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 10, 1954], No. 34316/55. Class 39(1). An electric discharge device comprises a tubular envelope 1 to the lower end of which are sealed a pair of thin-walled hollow cylindrical ceramic members 4, 4<SP>1</SP> located in spaced relation a body of a liquid metal 7 retained within each of the ceramic members to form a pair of electrodes and a conductor 8, 8<SP>1</SP> surrounding each of the ceramic members at the surface level of the metal therein and co-operating with the members to provide the starting electrodes of the device. The ceramic members 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are sealed by a vitreous seal 5, 5<SP>1</SP> through which are led in conductors 6, 6<SP>1</SP>. The starting electrodes 8, 8<SP>1</SP> are connected by a spark gap 18, 19 to the transformer 15 of a starting circuit which may include a phase shifting device 24.
