Abstract

Abrasive grains are coated with a heathardened vinyl polysiloxane. Specified abrasive grains are fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, corundum, diamone and boron carbide. The abrasive grains may be coated by mixing with a vinyl polysiloxane or a water-hydrolysable vinyl silane of general structure <FORM:0781351/III/1> where X1, X2 and X3 are monofunctional groups, e.g. alkoxy or halogen groups; examples of such compounds being vinyl tris-methoxy silane, vinyl tris-ethoxy silane, vinyl tris-(2-methoxy ethoxy) silane, vinyl trichlorsilane and vinyl ethoxy dichlorosilane. The coated grains being cured at elevated temperatures. The examples describe the coating of abrasive grains by (1) and (4) hydrolysing tris-2-methoxy ethoxy vinyl silane in aqueous caustic soda solution; (2) and (3) mixing abrasive grains with a toluene solution of a partially condensed vinyl polysiloxane resin of average molecular weight between 3000 and 5000.ALSO:An abrasive article comprises heat-hardened vinyl polysiloxane-coated abrasive grains bonded by a heat-hardened phenol-aldehyde resin. The siloxane coating comprises from 0.0001 to 0.35 per cent based on the weight of the grains. The abrasive grains, e.g. fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, corundum, diamond or boron carbide may be coated by mixing with either a vinyl polysiloxane or a water-hydrolysable vinyl silane having the general structure: <FORM:0781351/IV (a)/1> where X1, X2 and X3 represent monofunctional groups, e.g. alkoxy or halogen groups; examples of such compounds being vinyl trismethoxy silane, vinyl tris-ethoxy silane, vinyl tris (2-methoxy ethoxy) silane, vinyl trichlorosilane, vinyl dimethoxy chlorosilane and vinyl ethoxy dichlorosilane. The coated grains are cured at an elevated temperature, mixed with a wetting agent and a heat-reactive phenolaldehyde resin, moulded and baked. The examples describe the coating of the abrasive grains by (1) and (4) hydrolysing tris-2 methoxy ethoxy vinyl silane in aqueous caustic soda solution; (2) and (3) mixing abrasive grains with a toluene solution of a partially condensed vinyl polysiloxane resin of average molecular weight between 3000 and 5000, the coated grains being mixed with a heat-hardenable phenol-aldehyde resin and cured to the required shape. The compositions may be used in the manufacture of abrasive paper, abrasive wheels and abrasive rods.
