Abstract

Synthetic rubber is vulcanized by heating with 0.1 to 10 per cent based on the weight of rubber of a peroxide of the formula <FORM:0781040/IV (a)/1> where R1 is an aryl group and R2, R3, R4, R5, and R6 are selected from hydrogen and alkyl groups of less than 4 carbon atoms. The synthetic rubber may comprise a polymerized diolefin, or a substituted diolefin such as a halogenated diolefin, or copolymer of a diolefin with styrene or an acrylic acid ester or nitrile and preferably consists of GRS synthetic rubber, polymerized isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, chloroprene, or an isoprene-styrene or isopreneacrylonitrile copolymer. Examples are described of the preparation of vulcanizates comprising (in parts by weight) GRS synthetic rubber 100, furnace black 50, and (1) methyl (a ,a -dimethylbenzyl) peroxide 2, (2) methyl-(a ,a -dimethyl-p-methylbenzyl) peroxide 1.35, (3) methyl (a ,a -dimethyl-p-isopropylbenzyl) peroxide 1.54, and (4) tertiary butyl (a ,a -dimethylbenzyl) peroxide 1.54, respectively.ALSO:Natural or synthetic rubber is vulcanized by heating with 0,1 to 10 per cent based on the weight of rubber of a peroxide of the formula: <FORM:0781040/V/1> where R1 is an aryl group and R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are selected from hydrogen and alkyl groups of less than 4 carbon atoms. Examples are described of the preparation of vulcanizates comprising (in parts by weight) GRS synthetic rubber 100, furnace black 50, and (1) methyl (a , a -dimethylbenzyl) peroxide 2, (2) methyl (a, a -dimethyl-p-methylbenzyl) peroxide 1,35, (3) methyl (a, a-dimethyl-p-isopropylbenzyl) peroxide 1,54, and (4) tertiary butyl (a , a -dimethylbenzyl) peroxide 1,54 respectively. Other examples concern the preparation of vulcanizates comprising natural rubber 100 (parts by weight), furnace black 50, and tertiary butyl (a , a -dimethylbenzyl) or methyl (a , a -dimethyl-p-isopropylbenzyl) peroxide 1,54.
