Class 100(1) [Also in Group XXII] An expanding mandrel for winding and reeling includes a mandrel shaft, a pair of cylindrical segments hingedly secured to said shaft for pivotal movement relative thereto, and a jaw pivotally secured to the face of one of said segments and having a gripping surface adapted to approach either an inner face of the other cylindrical segment or a second similar jaw pivotally secured to said face, when the jaw or jaws is or are pivoted outwardly towards the periphery of the mandrel for the purpose of securing sheet material. A rectangular sectioned mandrel shaft 30 has secured in the bores of longitudinal corner slots 31 wedge bars 32 which co-operate with wedge bars 37, so that when the bars 37 are moved axially to the right, by a spider 35 on an axially movable rod 30a, they are caused to move radially outwards. Outward movement of the bars 37 moves cylindrical segments 54, mounted on three faces of the mandrel shaft 30, outwardly against springs 61. and rocks a pair of cylindrical segments 66, pivoted at 78 on the fourth face of the shaft 30. towards one another against springs 67. Opposing undercut faces 86 of the segments 66 have co-operating gripping jaws 90 pivotally mounted therein, which jaws are urged outwardlv by spring means 104 and when the mandrel is expanded, serve to grip the end of a metal strip 120 to be wound on the mandrel. In a modification, Fig. 8, only one jaw 90 is provided to co-operate with a flat surface 116 on the other segment 112.
