Abstract

<PICT:0780458/IV (a)/1> Pearlescent material is produced by introducing a flowable composition of unsaturated polyester, pearl essence and peroxide catalyst into a preheated drum rotatable about a horizontal axis, the catalyst being added shortly before the composition is introduced, rotating the drum, the viscosity and temperature of the composition and the speed of rotation being such as to form a cylindrical layer of polymerized non-flowable material, and then removing the material while still in a flaccid condition, e.g. by cutting parallel to the cylinder axis. The material may then be formed and allowed to set into a flat sheet, e.g. 1/8 in. thick. In the preferred process an unsaturated polyester/styrene mixture containing hydroquinone inhibitor and of viscosity 1000 to 1100 c.p.s. at 35 DEG to 40 DEG C., mixed with synthetic pearl essence or with fish scales in amyl acetate/diallyl phthalate, cobalt naphthenate promoter and a silicone oil lubricant, is heated to 40 DEG C., a catalyst is added and the whole is agitated for about 3 minutes. The mixture is then introduced into a 30 in. diameter aluminium drum 34 of a centrifugal casting machine, the inner surface of the drum having been coated with a silicone grease mould release agent, and the drum being rotated on idler and drive wheels 20, 24 to ensure even distribution. The drum is then rotated at 40 revolutions per minute for 30 minutes while the temperature is maintained at 40 DEG C. by infra-red lamps 40. The flanges 38 retain the material in the drum as well as engaging the drive wheels during the operation. Catalysts specified are hydrogen and methyl ethyl ketone peroxides and cyclohexyl hydroperoxide. The polyester resin preferably contains a film-forming ingredient, such as paraffin, in order to obtain a tack-free surface, but otherwise talcum or corn starch may be spread over a tacky surface obtained. Pieces, e.g. imitation pearl button blanks, are punched from the flaccid material in the flat sheet stage before it sets completely.
