Abstract

780,367. Blind riveting; portable turning- apparatus. ARO EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 2, 1955, No. 22203/55. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). A tool for cutting and forming rivets, bolts, mandrels of blind-riveting assemblies, &c., comprises a stationary tubular body 18 having a drive shaft 22 rotatable and slidable therein, and a jaw-carrier 36 rotatable by said drive shaft, spring-loaded cutting jaws 40 pivotally mounted in said jaw carrier, a cone 34 carried by said drive shaft to operate said jaws, power-drive means, e.g. a compressed-air motor 10 for rotating said drive shaft and jaws, and a manual actuator 60 to slide said drive shaft when rotating and thereby close said jaws to cut the rivet, bolt or mandrel and enlarge and burnish its outer end. Between the jaws 40 the jaw carrier has a bore 48 accommodating a spring-loaded ejector plug 50. The drive connection between the drive shaft head 32 and the jaw carrier 36 consists of a cross pin 58 passing through the head 32 and engaging in slots 56 in the jaw carrier, Fig. 5. The actuator for the jaws consists of a forked lever 60, the depending arms 62 of which engage a flange 66 on a spool 30. In operation, the tool is associated with a blindriveting assembly as shown in Fig. 8, a gauge tube 68 establishing a predetermined relationship between the cutting and forming edges 46 of the jaws and the mandrel. By depressing the trigger 12 and the lever 60 the jaws are rotated and brought together to cut the mandrel and form a head 80 to secure the mandrel in the rivet 72.
