Abstract

A stainless steel which may be subjected to a rolling operation and to a hardening treatment, for example in the production of knife blades, has a composition in the following range: C, 0.2-1.0 per cent; Cr, 11.5-15.0 per cent; Mn, 0.15-2.0 per cent; Si, 0.15-1.0 per cent; Co, 1.0-6.0 per cent; B, 0.001-0.005 per cent; Fe, the balance except for impurities including not more than 0.04 per cent each of S and P. In an example a steel within the range was heated to 1082 DEG C. reduced in thickness by 1/4 inch in each of nine passes through a rolling mill to form a sheet 3/16 inch thick at a finishing temperature of 788-815 DEG C. The sheet was reheated at 1082 DEG C., rolled to 3/32 inch, annealed at 788 DEG C. for five hours, formed into knife blades and then quenched from 1038 DEG C. in water.
