Abstract

780,238. Tapping. MARQUETTE METAL PRODUCTS CO. Aug. 10, 1955, No. 23066/55. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] In a screwing or tapping machine wherein the aligned work-spindle H and tool-spindle D rotate continuously in the same direction, the spindle D is driven selectively from gears F, S, rotating at different speeds, through coil-spring clutches D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>. The outer ends of the springs are attached to sleeves 14, 141, secured respectively to gears F, S and freely rotatable on shaft D, whilst the inner end of either spring may be moved axially to grip one of the sleeves 15, 16 keyed to shaft D. This is effected by a sliding ring E, carrying pins 25, 26 engaging the springs. In operation, with shaft H rotating faster than shaft D and a spring P<SP>1</SP> pushing ring E to the right, tapping proceeds, with relative axial-feed between tap T and work W, until an electrical contact L on the spindle-slide engages a contact L<SP>1</SP> on the work-holder to energize a solenoid P and pull ring E to the left. This clutches gear F to shaft D, which thereupon rotates faster than the work to withdraw the tap. Contacts L, Ll remain latched together during retraction, compressing a spring L<SP>2</SP>, but release on complete withdrawal of the tap to de-energize solenoid P and allow spring P<SP>1</SP> to return ring E to the right. Lubricating machines. Lubricating oil is flushed through the sleeves 14, 15 &c. to prevent foreign matter clogging the springs D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>.
