Abstract

779,927. Feeding webs. LEVEY CO., Inc., F. H. May 6, 1955 [March 28, 1955]. No. 13145/55. Class 100(1) A rotary web-bed printing press having a turning-bar positioned in the path of the web through the press is provided with a driven roller about which the web passes on leaving the turning bar, the roller being driven through a variable speed drive where its speed may be varied independendently of the press speed to maintain constant the tension of the web passing to and leaving the roller. As shown, the web 1 passes over a guide roller 2 and then around variable speed rollers 3 and 4 having pinions 5 and 6, the pinion 5 being driven by a variable speed unit 7 controlled by a tension detector 8. The web passes around a variable speed roller 12 before and after passage around an impression cylinder 20 co-operating with printing cylinders 21. The roller 12 is driven by a variable speed unit 13 controlled by detectors 16 and 17. After passage around a drying drum 25, the web passes around variable speed rollers 26, 27, and 28 driven by a variable speed unit 32 controlled by detector 33. Shrinkage of the web during drying is compensated for by a roller 34 manually slidable along guides 35. The web is reversed, for printing on the opposite side, by passage around turning-bars 36 and 37. Tension changes, as a result of adjustment of the turning-bars are compensated for by variable speed rollers 38, 39 and 47, 48 driven by variable speed units 42 and 51, Fig. 2, not shown, respectively controlled by detectors 45, Fig. 2, not shown, and 54, 55 respectively.
