Abstract
778,630. Calculating apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 21, 1955 [Sept. 29,1954], No. 28115/54. Class 106 (1). Mechanism for converting polar co-ordinates to rectangular co-ordinates and vice-versa comprises an index member 5 movable along a pivoted radius arm 6, carriages 1 and 2 movable along respective rectangular co-ordinate axes, and a compensating tape and pulley system interconnecting the carriages and index member. In the mechanism shown, there are two tapes 8 and 15, indicated respectively by full and broken lines. The first extends between fixed points A and B and is formed with a loop from the carriage 1 to a pulley 10 on the index member 5. A further loop is formed between a fixed pulley 13 and a pulley 14 on the carriage 2. By this arrangement of the tape 8, the carriage 2 and index member 5 are constrained to maintain horizontal.alignment. The complementary tape 15 is similarly formed with a loop from the carriage 2 to a pulley 23 on the index member and a loop from a fixed pulley 19 and a pulley 20 on the carriage 1, so as to maintain vertical alignment of the carriage 1 and index member. Springs 21 and 22 bias the carriages towards the origin of the system. When used as a height computer, compensation for curvature of the earth may be introduced by providing an appropriately curved track for the carriage 1.
