Abstract
An antibiotic effective against a particular species of pathogenic micro-organism is produced by preparing a culture of said pathogenic micro-organism and subjecting the said culture to certain physical and/or chemical means which cause the micro-organism, while still alive, to produce an antibacterial substance which, when isolated, is toxic to that particular species of micro-organism. The physical means are screened ultra-violet radiations, infra-red radiations, ultra-sonic radiations, X-ray microwaves or Wood's light. The chemical means are: (a) hydrosulphites, aldehydes or peroxides which cause a variation of the redox potential of the medium and effect the bacterial respiration; and (b) sodium chloride, sodium propionate, arsenites, organo arsenious compounds, cystine and glutathione which interfere with the normal metabolism of the cells of the micro-organisms. The antibiotic is recovered from the ozonized culture by grinding the culture with sand, adding water, stirring and filtering. The aqueous extract so formed is concentrated in vacuo. Specified micro-organisms are Bacterium coli, Salmonella Typhi, B. paratyphus A and B, Pasteurella pestis, Vibrio cholera, Pseudomonas, Aeruginosa, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacterium Anthracis, Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Epidermophyton interdigitalis and Mycobacterium Leprae.ALSO:An antibiotic effective against the pathogenic microorganism from which it is derived (see Group IV(b)) is administered to animals including humans (a) orally e.g. pills or capsules, with or without the addition of absorbent inert materials (b) rectally in the form of a suppository and (c) parenterally. Pathogens referrd to are B. coli, Salmonella Typhi, B. paratyphus A and B, Pasteurella pestis, Vibrio cholera, Pseudomones aeruginosa, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacterium anthracis, Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus aurens, Epidermophyton interdigitalis and Mycobacterium Leprae.
