Abstract

778,158. Electric immersion heaters. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNA-' TIONAL CO. Dec. 30, 1955 [Jan. 10, 1955], No. 37412/55. Class 39(3) An immersion heater comprises a corrosion resistant metal sheath 13 enclosing a helically coiled heating element insulated from the sheath by material such as magnesium oxide, the end portions of the sheath being hermetically sealed in a copper sheet 20 preferably by brazing. A steel Clamping plate 22 abuts the sheet 20 and also engages a ceramic insulating block 24 having a recess 25 which registers with an opening 23 in the plate. Terminal pins 15 connected to the heating element have terminal strips 30 spot .welded to them and lie in grooves 34 of the block 24. An electrically insulating hermetic seal between the sheath and the terminals is formed by pouring molten sealing material, e.g. an asphalt material designed for high temperatures, in the cavity formed by the opening and recess 23, 25. While the material is still soft, an insulating plug 32 is fitted in the block 24.
