Abstract

777,616. Air supply for combustion. BIBBY, R. T. Dec. 23, 1955 [Dec. 23, 1954], No. 37138/54. Class 126 [Also in Group XIII] Air from beneath the floor is fed to a firegrate through one or more openings in the fireback below the firebars but above the fireplace floor, and a baffle behind each opening is arranged to prevent ash falling into the airway. Air entering a chamber 16 below the grate is controlled by a damper 17 operated by a handle passing through the heart, and metal boxes 13 at either side of the fireback having outlets 14 at the base of the firecheeks communicate with the chamber 16. A partition 19 in each box 13, Fig. 4 acts as a baffle to prevent ash falling into the box and blocking the airway. The fireback and cheeks are formed of metal with a refractory facing, and the boxes 13 are formed integral with them. A convector passage with an inlet at the lower part of the fireplace surround and a baffled upper part discharging at the top of the surround may be formed integral with and' at the front of the air supply boxes. According to the Provisional Specification, by-pass air is fed to the chimney above the smoke shelf from below the floor through separate ducts controlled by dampers linked to the combustion air supply damper so that the by-pass damper is closed as the main air supply damper is closed.
