Abstract

777,431. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Feb. 25, 1955 [April 19, 1954], No. 10583/54. Class 100(1) Registering devices:-Sheets fed in underlapping formation over a feed-table to front registers are then side-registered by apparatus comprising means for moving each sheet into contact with a member held above the table, adjacent a side lay, to be held thereagainst or thereby to permit a succeeding sheet to pass under the held sheet, and means for drawing the edge of the raised portion of the sheet laterally against the side lay. As shown in Figs. 2 and 8, an adjustable bracket 10 on the feed-table 11 has pivoted thereto at 12 a lever 14 carrying a roller 15. The lever 14 is urged downwardly against an adjustable stop by one or both coil springs 19, 20 arranged on a stud 21. A guideway 30, having a roller 33 engaging a cam 34 on a rotating shaft 35, has slidable therein a slide 31 having a roller 36 engaged by one end of a bell-crank lever 37 which has a second roller 39 in contact with a cam 40 on the shaft 35. The slide 31 carries a tongue 44 disposed beneath a slot 28 in the table 11. The side lay comprises a face 24 of the adjustable bracket 10, the face being cut away at 25. The lower part of the roller 15 is received within, but does not protrude through, a slot in a smoother plate 27. In operation, when the guideway 30 rises, the tongue 44 pushes the sheet 46 up to the roller 15 where it is gripped in the raised position to allow the succeeding sheet 47 to pass under the tongue. The slide 31 is now moved to the right so that the tongue 44 draws the sheet 46 up to the lay 24, and the tongue now slips on the sheet and is drawn clear. The guideway 30 then moves down with the slide 31, and the slide is returned to the left by a spring 42, ready for operation on the next. sheet 47. The registered sheet 46 falls on the table 11 and is removed by grippers (not shown). The upper face of the tongue 44 is convex and roughened, and the peripheral surface of the roller 15 is concave. This sidelay mechanism may be carried by an adjustable section of a feed-table formed as described in Specificatior. 777,432. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, a laterally-reciprocable slide 50 arranged above the feed-table 51 has a suction gripper 53 against which the edge of a sheet 61 is blown by compressed air from a nozzle 56, the sucker then pulling the sheet against a side lay 54. Sheet guides and smoothers:-Figs. 2 and 8 the vertically-reciprocating guideway 30 carries a surface 45 which, when the guideway has been raised to its upper limit, lies in the slot in the feed-table 11 to form a continuation of the surface of the table and to guide the following sheet over the slot. The undersurface of the tongue 44 is also convex to act as a sheet-guide. The roller 15 fits within a slot in a sheetsmoother 27. In Fig. 10 a smoother blade 57 is rocked to the full line position by an abutment 59 on the gripper slide 50, and is urged by a spring to the dotted line position to support the sheet as it is drawn sidewise by the gripper.
