In a submerged arc-welding machine for simultaneously depositing metal on a plurality of workpieces, a carriage 41 moving on rails 37, 38 supports a traverse 42 moving at right angles to the rails 37, 38 and carrying the welding heads 4. The traverse 42 runs between rollers journalled on the carriage 41 and is reciprocated by an adjustable crank driven by a motor on the carriage. The traverse 42 carries four welding heads 4, each comprising a torch 6 through which a continuous electrode is fed from a reel 31 and a flux nozzle 5. A double-armed work-table 2 is centrally pivoted and carries a set of four work stations 121 on each arm, so that workpieces may be unloaded and reloaded while other workpieces are being welded. An annular projection on other rotary part 116 of the table 2 dips into mercury in an annular well in the fixed pedestal 117 to provide a path for the welding current. Each work-station comprises a jig 126, Fig. 7, mounted on a pivoted plate 128 which may be lowered under control of a pneumatic cylinder 134 to allow surplus flux to be cleared away. The workpieces are held in position by magnetic clamps 127. When the carriage motor is switched on, cams 88 on the carriage 41 actuate switches 87 on the frame 11 to open the flux valves, switch on the welding current and start the traverse and electrode feed motors. The reverse operation automatically takes place as the carriage 41 reaches the end of its travel. Rotation of the work-table 2 by the operator automatically reverses the carriage 41 to its starting position and the work-table is locked in each of its operative positions by a pneumatically-actuated bolt.
