Abstract

777,320. Filtering liquids. FRAM CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1955 [June 20, 1955], No. 36456/55. Class 46. A separator for removing water from a hydrocarbon comprises a tank 10 having an upper high pressure chamber 25 containing coalescers 28, formed of tubes 32, Fig. 8, of fibre glass with longitudinal slots 49 on their external peripheries, the coalescers being mounted on the floor 21 of the compartment and communicating therethrough with sacks 45 suspended from the floor in a lower compartment 26 of less pressure, the sacks being of closely woven fabric adapted to pass the hydrocarbon through them but to block the coalesced water until the weight of arrested water breaks through the fabric. The coalescers are protected within and without by metal tubes 31, 33. The sacks dip into water W in the bottom of the compartment 26 and are made of nylon or other closely woven (e.g. 100 threads to the inch) fabric that does not swell on becoming wet. Any remaining water sinks by gravity to the bottom of the compartment 26 as the hydrocarbon rises to an outlet 14 at the top of the compartment.
