Class 8(1) Prior to or coincident with the introduction of a blower connection into normally closed opening 12, Fig. 2, in the casing wall 2 of a suction cleaner of fan and canister type one or more normally open exhaust air outlets 11 in said casing wall 2 are blocked by valve means 14 whereby a concentrated blast of air issues through the opening 12 on introduction of the connection 13 (not shown). As shown the valve means comprises two arched spring strips 14 riveted to diametrically opposite points 15 of the wall 2 and having their free bent-over ends 16 secured to opposite ends of a bar 20 which is rocked about a central pivot pin 21 on inward movement of a sliding plate 23 carrying a stud 26 engaging a slot 27 in the bar 20 whereby the strips 14 close the exhaust openings 11. The plate 23 is pushed inwardly by engagement of the bore connection with a detent 29. In a modification the two arched strips are riveted to the casing wall at a common point 31, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the free ends are forced apart by a lazy-tongs mechanism on introduction of the blower hose connection to effect blocking of the exhaust openings. In a further modification a single spring strip 40, Fig. 5, is riveted at one end 41 to the casing wall 2 and the bent-over free end 16 is secured to a pivoted arm 42 actuated by an arm 45 and external handle 16. In each con struction the blower opening is closed by a removable plug when not in use.
