Abstract

Class 138(1) A. windscreen wiper comprises at least one flexible strip extending along and assembled to the squeegee element to permit the latter to flex in the plane of the squeegee but to restrain transverse flexing thereof, and at least one yoke disposed along the back of the squeegee element and having its opposite ends connected to the flexible strip, wherein the yoke is of bowed or 'arched form and is flexible, in the plane of the squeege, the ends of the yoke being connected to the strip so that whenever the latter flexes to conform with a portion of a windscreen of increased convex curvature, the ends of the yoke will be moved closer together, the pressure exerted by a windscreen wiper arm on the yoke tending to force its ends apart and thus to urge the flexible strip and the squeegee element to a straight condition. As shown in. the embodiment of Fig. 1, two yokes 1, 1a each comprised of two rigid parts 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and 11a, 11<SP>1</SP>a are respectively integral with the ends of flexible strips 12, 12a provided with fingers 13 to engage in grooves extending along the sides of the squeegee element 4. The parts 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and 11a, 11<SP>1</SP>a are bent inwardly of the ends of the strips and are respectively hinged together by pins 17, 17a which also hinge the yokes to the ends of a bridge piece 6 carried by a wiper arm. If desired the strips 12, 12a may be joined together at their inner ends to form a single strip. Moreover a single two-part hinged yoke connected to the squeegee may serve as the bridge-piece. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the yokes are each in one piece the central and end portions being channel shaped whilst the remaining portions are flexible. The end portions 21 of the yokes are riveted, as at 26, to ears 25 on pairs of flexible strips 22, which engage in grooves extending along the sides of the squeegee 4. The strip pairs 22 are stamped from a single strip of metal, the outer ends of the strip pairs 22 being connected by transverse portions 23 whilst the inner ends of the pairs are connected by loop portions 24 which fit around the back of the squeegee. Recesses 27 in the strips 22 facilitate the insertion of the squeegee between the strips. More than two yokes may be associated with the squeegee in which case the yokes are connected to secondary yokes in turn connected to the bridge piece.
