Abstract
775,770. Rotary pipe couplings. MURRAY, W. Aug. 17, 1955 [May 17, 1954], No. 14452/54. Class 99(1) In a rotary union especially a rotary union adapted on the one hand to be connected to a fluid (e.g. steam) conveying pipe or pipes and on the other hand to be connected to a hollow rotary body such as a roll to and from which fluid is to be conducted and having a rotary , seal 12, 13 between the relatively rotating shaft and the casing of the union i.e. a seal suitable for sealing a continuously rotating body the elements of which have opposed smooth flat faces which run one on the other rubbing or slipping contacts 9, 21, are provided for electrically connecting the shaft and the casing independently of the contact seal and the bearings during relative rotation thereof. As shown the end 50 of a hollow shaft 4 may be attached e.g. screwed to a hollow roll. An inlet 6 is provided so that fluid may be delivered through the hollow shaft into the hollow roll and may have an outlet 8 for escape of fluid e.g. condensate by way of a conduit (not shown) arranged within the hollow shaft and intruding into the roll. The flow could be reversed i.e. to flow in at 8 and out at 6. The unshown conduit may be dispensed with and one of the ports e.g. 8 if 6 is the inlet port may be plugged or closed as for example where the fluid flows out of the other end of the roll. The collar 9 is secured by a circlip 10. The circlip may be secured by solder 10a inserted between the shaft and the collar. A metal e.g. stainless steel ring 12 is urged by a resilient bellows 11 against the ring 13 which may be of polytetrafluoroethylene, e.g. sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Fluor" or may be of carbon or of concentric layers of carbon and resin plastic material. The ring 13 is secured in a recess on a further metal ring 14 which may be of phosphor bronze. The contact 21 may be of carbon. Specification 728,431 is referred to.
