Abstract
775,698. Controlling variable speed hydraulic transmissions. OFFICINE GALILEO SOC. PER AZIONI. Nov. 16, 1954 [Nov. 18, 1953], No. 33163/54. Class 69 (2). In hydraulic apparatus comprising a pump 1 and a motor 3 connected by pipes 4,5, liquid lost through leakage is replaced by a pump 6 driven by a motor 7. If the pressure in either of the pipes 4, 5 is less than the delivery pressure of the pump 6, liquid passes into the pipe having the lowest pressure via a pipe 9, one of two valves 10, 11, and pipes 12, 121 or 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. The pump 6 discharges its excess delivery through a valve to a feed tank. The tank is connected by a pipe 8 to the pump. The apparatus is prevented from operating if the supply of electricity fails or if the supply of additional fluid from the pump 6 fails, and is also protected from the effects of excess pressure in the pipes 4, 5. The pipes 12, 13 are connected together via pipes 15, 16 and by a differential pressure valve 14 having a spring 19 which balances the combined pressures in the pipes 15, 16 and normally keeps the valve closed. A rise in pressure in either of the pipes 15, 16 causes the valve to open against the spring pressure and the balance in pressure to be restored. The pressure in pipe 9 is connected via a pipe 21 to a spring-urged piston 24 in a cylinder 23 and, if this pressure falls, the piston 24 is moved by its spring and through a linkage 27, 28 moves a slide valve 29 and connects pipes 31 and 32 whereby the supply between the pump 1 and the motor 3 is short-circuited. A further linkage 34-38 applies a brake 40, 41 to a shaft 42 connected to the motor. Failure of the electricity supply causes a solenoid-operated valve 43 to open and the pressure in the pipe 21 to drop. The piston 24 is then moved by its spring and operates the slide valve 29 and the brake 40, 41. The valve 43 may be controlled by any suitable mechanical, hydrodynamic, or pneumatic device, or may be operated manually.
