Abstract

775,631. Windscreen cleaners. ALFA ROMEO SOC. PER AZIONI. Aug. 24, 1955 [Sept. 17, 1954], No. 24341/55. Class 138(1) [Also in Group XXXVII] An electric motor 1 driving the blade of a windscreen wiper is controlled by a switch 3 having an "off" position and two operative positions. When the switch is set to engage contact 4, the motor is continuously energized. Movement of the switch to engage contact 7 energizes the heating-coil of a bimetallic strip 12 which is adapted to expand and to actuate a spring-biassed switch-member 8 for opening the heating circuit and closing the motor circuit. After a time delay, the bimetallic element cools sufficiently to allow the member 8 to snap back to its original position, so providing intermittent operation of the motor and preventing excessive wear of the wiper when the screen is only slightly wet. The switch 3 may be coupled to a rheostat for adjusting the current through the heating-coil when the switch is positioned for intermittent operation of the motor, thus controlling the on-off periods of the motor, Fig. 2 (not shown). The heating-coil may be connected in parallel with an adjustable resistor and in series with the motor so as to act as an overload release to protect the motor against excessive current, Fig. 3 (not shown). The thermal 'switch may be replaced by one of the clockwork type.
