775,552. Feeding webs. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. May 3, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953], No. 12841/54. Class 100(1) An apparatus for accumulating a surplus of strip material for feeding while changing a roll from which the strip is unwound, or on which the strip is rewound, comprises a plurality of rollers mounted on fixed axis and a plurality of rollers mounted on a vertically slidable frame, the strip being looped around the rollers one or more of which are rollers which centre the strip on the rollers. As shown, rollers 48 are rotatably mounted on a carriage 34 having a guide 32 slidable along guide posts 30, while rollers 46 are rotatably mounted on fixed axes, such that the strip S forms loops around the rollers 48, 46. The carriage is attached to wire ropes 36 passing over guide pulleys 40, 42 and carrying counterweights 38. The strip S passes around a narrow-bodied roller 8, i.e. a roller having a strip-supporting surface of less width than the strip, then around a centring roller 44 which may, as described in Specifications 709,908, 717,671, or 735,561 or preferably Specification 775,551 and is then looped around the rollers 46, 48. The rollers 48 are preferably centring rollers similar to the roller 44, while the rollers 46 are narrow-bodied rollers. Rollers 50 and 52 on the exit side of the rollers 46, 48 correspond to rollers 44, 8. When it is necessary to change a supply roll of strip 3, sufficient strip will be accumulated in loops around the rollers 46, 48 to permit strip to continue feeding to a treating apparatus beyond the rollers 46, 48. When the supply roll has been attached, the feed on the entry side of the rollers 46, 48 is speeded up until the carriage 34 returns to its upper position. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6, and 7, not shown, the rollers on fixed axes are mounted above rollers on a vertically slidable counterweighted carriage which descends to take up slack which develops when the strip is stopped beyond the accumulating apparatus.
