Abstract
775,428. Welding by pressure; making resistors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DONELAN, J. A. April 19, 1955 [Feb. 16 1954], No. 4576/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In apparatus for electric resistance welding having two electrodes, one of which is annular or part annular and at least partially surrounds the other, the electrodes have work-engaging surfaces which are wholly or partly formed by non-planar surfaces of revolution about a common axis. For welding a connecting wire 3 to a resistor body, one electrode is a rod 6 having an axial bore 7 for the shank of the wire 3 and is surrounded by an insulating bush 11 on which slides a spring-biased brass bush 10 to which the other electrode 8, a sleeve about the electrode 6 is secured. Flanges on the bush 11 limit the electrode movement. With the wire 3 in the electrode 6, the resistor ceramic body 1 coated with electrically resistive material and having metal end caps 2, 2, is supported in an anvil 13 and the electrodes 6, 8 are moved to bring a recess 9 in electrode 8 into contact with an end cap 2, further movement compressing the biasing spring 12 and causing the head 4 of wire 3 to press against the cap 2. Current is switched on preferably where the cap is deformed into contact with the body 1 and after it is switched off pressure is maintained for forging and during cooling. The electrode 8 may be carried on a resilient arm attached to but insulated from a part carrying the electrode 6 and may be of U or horseshoe shape.
