775,371. Ornamenting. BROCK, H. W. July 14, 1954 [July 20, 1953], No. 20511/54. Class 93. Heated plastic material is extruded, and, while still hot, a coating of powdered material is applied thereto, e.g. by spraying, blowing or brushing or by rollers. The plastic material, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, styrene co-polymer, rubber or artificial rubber, may be extruded in thin sheet or tubular form The powdered material may be metal dust, fine textile fibres, wood dust, powdered plastics, paper pulp, or the like. As shown, .plastic from an extrusion nozzle 4 passes, while still in a fluid state, between two opposing nozzles 6 and 7, mounted close together which emit blasts of hot compressed air supplied through conduits 9 and 10, respectively, by an inlet pipe 8, and powdered coating material, delivered from a hopper 13 to a mixing chamber 12 formed in the conduit 10, is carried by the air current through the nozzle 7 and impinges on one side of the plastic. Excess powder which does not adhere to the plastic film is withdrawn through an exhaust chamber 14 by a pump 15. Movement of the plastic away from the nozzle 7 is prevented by the hot air jet from the nozzle 6, which may be adapted to supply coating, not necessarily of the same material, to the other side of the film. The powder material may be sprayed or blown through a stencil printing frame to provide a pattern, or it may be applied by a series of fixed or moving jets. It may be applied along the edges of sheet material so that these may be fastened together by means of an adhesive.
