Abstract
The invention comprises octahydro-indolo-quinolines (ergolenes) of the formula <FORM:0774991/IV(b)/1> where R1 and R2 are C1-C8 alkyl, an acid addition salts thereof. These are made from 4 - acyl - 7 - alkyl - 9 - cyano - ergolenes of the formula <FORM:0774991/IV(b)/2> by treatment with the appropriate alkanol in the presence of an acid; R is C1-C8 alkyl, monocyclic aryl or monocyclic aralkyl having 1-8 carbon atoms in the side chain (see Specification 774,990). An example is given of the preparation of 9-carbomethoxy-7-methyl-10-ergolene from 4 - acetyl - 9 - cyano - 7 - methyl - 10 - ergolene with methanol and sulphuric acid. Other starting materials may be used in which R is methyl or phenyl, R1 is methyl, ethyl, propyl or n-heptyl and R2 is methyl or isopropyl. The products may be converted into lysergic acid and its homologues as described in Specifications 774,984 and 774,992.
