774,065. Sawing; grinding. OREGON SAW CHAIN CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1955 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 24000/55. Classes 60 and 145 The side-cutting teeth 36 and raker teeth 46 of a saw chain are sharpened by removing material in one or more passes from the top surface of the teeth by means of a grinding wheel 82 while the chain is moved in a circular path, e.g., round the nose of a saw bar 72. Each tooth is arranged rearwardly of the axial point of its link so that the tooth is presented to the grinding wheel at an angle giving a downward rake from the front cutting edge. The periphery of the grinding wheel may have bevelled edge portions 86 or be convex so that the raker teeth are of less height than the side cutting teeth, or be straight-across, in which case the two types of teeth have the same height. A further control of the relative heights of the teeth may, however, be obtained by arranging the side-cutter teeth and raker teeth at differing distances from the midpoint of their links, e.g., if the raker teeth are at a greater such distance than the side cutting teeth, they will be ground to a lower height. The teeth may be made of hard material or may have a layer of tungsten carbide or other such hard matrial applied, in the case of the teeth 36, to the outer side and front faces that form the cutting edge.
