Abstract

773,818. Dry scrubbing carpets. HOOVER, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1954 [Jan. 5, 1954], No. 37140/54. Class 138(1) Apparatus for treating carpets with granular cleaning material includes a machine having at least one motor-driven shaft or other rotary member mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, and a carpetcleaning disc connected to the lower end of the rotary member to be driven thereby and having on its underside ribs with smooth surfaces of gently curved crosssection the ribs affording a number of lengths each extending from a point at a small radius to a point at a greater radius spaced angularly from the inner point about the axis in the direction of rotation, so as to tend to retain the cleaning material within the confines of the disc. The disc 15, Fig. 1, made of metal or "plastic" is provided on its upper side with a hub 16 and on its underside with radial ribs 26, Figs. 3 to 6, the inner and outer ends of the ribs 26 being connected to annular ribs 24 and 27, respectively. The recesses 25 formed between the ribs merge thereinto with smooth curves as shown in Fig. 6. The underside of the disc tapers towards its centre and the periphery is bevelled at 23, as shown in Fig. 1. The hub 16 has a transverse slot 17 to engage a flattened tongue 6 on the brush shaft 3, Fig. 1, of a known floor polishing machine, the disc being detachably secured to the shaft by a snap fastener 18. The upper half of the fastener is secured by a rivet to the tongue 6 whilst the lower half is secured by a rivet 19 to the hub. As shown in Fig. 1, the disc 15 is secured to the shaft with the brush 4, 5 still in position. The brush bristles 5, engaging the flat upper surface 20 of the disc serve as a resilient mount therefor. If desired the brush may be removed from the shaft and the resilient mount provided by springs, pads or the like mounted between the shaft end and the disc. Referring to Fig..6, as the disc rotates in the direction of the arrow the ribs 26 dry scrub the carpet and force a known granular cleaning material 30 into the pile 31 to dissolve the dirt imbedded therein. Subsequently the material and dissolved dirt may be removed by a suction cleaner or other means. In a modified form of disc, the inner and outer annular ribs are dispensed with and the remaining ribs are inclined to the radii of the disc, so as to be approximately tangential to a circle corresponding to the diameter of the hub. The inclined ribs are 'arranged so that as the disc rotates the inner ends trail with respect to the outer ends. In a further modification, only the inner annular rib of the disc shown in Fig. 3, is dispensed with and the inner ends of the radial ribs terminate short of the central portion of the disc.
