Abstract

773,667. Motor vehicle driving gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1955 [Jan. 20, 1955], No. 36615/55. Class 79(2). A motor vehicle comprises a forward propeller shaft 48 which extends downwardly towards the rear from a change-speed gear-box 32, is resiliently supported towards its rear end from the vehicle frame, and is connected by a universal joint 60 to a rearward propeller shaft 50 which is connected to the differential 40 by a universal joint 62 and is disposed below the rear seat 94 of the vehicle. The resilient support for the rear end of the shaft 48 comprises, Fig. 4, a ball bearing 74 resiliently mounted in a bracket 57 bolted to a transverse frame member 24. The ball bearing 74 is located on a reduced-diameter end-portion 66 of the shaft 48, by a member 70 of the joint 60 which is held in splined engagement with the shaft 48 by a nut 82. Since only the rearward shaft 50 has appreciable up-anddown movement, the only tunnel necessary in the vehicle floor is beneath the seat 94.
