772,989. Grinding. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO.- Sept. 5, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954], No, 25436/55. Class 60 [Also in Group XXXIV] In a composition brake shoe for use with wheels of railway vehicles and the like, a layer of abrasive material is provided on its wheel engaging surface for burnishing the wheel by frictional contact therewith, said layer being so thin as to be expended during an initial limited period of use so that only non-abrasive brake material will remain. In the embodiment illustrated, the brake shoe comprises the body 2 of composite brake material comprising four integral segments moulded to a backing plate 1. These segments have presenting braking surfaces 3, 4, 5 and 6 which engage the tread of the wheel to be braked the outer segments 3 and 6 being provided with an integral thin layer 8, 9 of abrasive material such as silicon carbide particles for conditioning and burnishing the wheel as it is expended by frictional contact with the rotating wheel during an application of the brakes. During successive applications of the brake the wheel will gradually become conditioned and the portions 8, 9 will be completely expended and only non-abrasive composition brake material will engage the wheel for preventing undesirable wear thereof during the remaining life of the brake shoe. An alternative construction of shoe is described and illustrated in the Specification for use with new wheels where it is desired to condition the wheel in a relatively short time.
