772,719. Transmitting solids in a liquid. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. May 25, 1954 [Feb. 25, 1953], No. 5289/53. Class 102(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A valve for a system conveying solid material in a liquid comprises a housing 1 having openings 2. 4 at one end and 3, 5 at the other and a rotary hollow cylindrical member 6 having. two ports at each end to, co-operate with ports 2-5 so that only ports 2 and 5 or 3 and 4 are open at the same time. Bearings 9 are provided and high-pressure water is fed to points 20 between the ports, to lubricate the valve, and also to the spaces 21, 22. Ports 2, 3 and 5 are fitted with hardened steel inserts 8, which may be spring-loaded, and the valve ports are also hardened to cut through solid material caught in the ports. Fig. 2 illustrates the system in which the pump 10 delivers water to the port 4 to force the material in the valve out through port 3 and pipe 12. When the ports 2 and 5 are open, the pump 16 forces solids mixed with liquid from the mixer 13 to the port 2 to fill the valve and displace the water remaining in the valve through port 5 to the mixer 13. Several valves may be arranged to work in unison to obtain an even continuous flow.
