Abstract
Linear polyethers having an average molecular weight of over 1000 and containing chains having a plurality of -R-O-R1- groups, where R and R1 are divalent hydrocarbon radicals, are stabilized by the addition of pbenzoquinone or a substituted derivative thereof, e.g. trimethyl pentyl benzoquinone, 3,31-dimethyl - 5,51 - diterbutyl - 2,6 - diphenyl quinone and 3,31-5,51-tetramethyl-2,6-diphenyl quinone; up to 1 per cent of the quinone may be added preferably by heating the polyether to its melting-point under vacuum or inert gas and then stirring in the quinone. The polyethers thus stabilized may be used in the production of rubbery polymers by reaction with bifunctional isocyanates as described in Specification 733,624. The polyethers are prepared from monomeric epoxides such as ethylene-isopropylene - trimethylene oxides, tetrahydrofurane, 1,3-dioxane and dioxalane, e.g. by methods described in Specification 723,777.
