Abstract

771,919. Consuming noxious gases. GIBBONS ASKAM, Ltd. March 9, 1955 [Dec. 14, 1953], No. 34779/53. Class 25 [Also in Group XII] Noxious gases from a crematory furnace 10 are oxidized by being led over a network of tubes 15 running between headers 16 and 17, disposed in the walls of one limb 13 of a divided flue 11, the said tubes being coated with an oxidation catalyst such as platinum, osmium or iridium powder mixtures thereof. The tubes are kept within the operative temperature range by passing therethrough, under thermostatic control, either hot gases, which may be combustion gases from the furnace, or cold air. Initial heating of the tubes may be by gas burners 20 disposed in the flue, by electric heating elements, if the furnace is heated electrically, or by the passage of hot gases. Hot air produced when the tubes are cooled may be used as combustion air in the furnace. The limbs 12 and 13 of the flue 11 are controlled by campers 14 and 21 respectively. Rods of catalyst, cooled when necessary by air admitted to the flue, may replace the tubes 15, which may also be disposed in the flue 11 at or near to the flue entrance.
