Apparatus for supervising the running of a thread or yarn winding machine having automatic bobbin changing mechanism and thread tying means comprises three independently operable feeler elements one of which is responsive to interruptions caused by the absence of the thread from the supply bobbin and another ahead of the first element, is responsive to interruptions caused by thread breakages, and the third element is responsive to the quantity of thread on the supply bobbin, the second feeler element being operatively associated with the thread tying means and with a mechanism for determining the rate of thread breakages, a mechanism for counting thread tying failures which mechanism operates a warning device when the number of said failures reaches a predetermined value, a single control lever actuable to initiate the operation of the bobbin changing mechanism or arresting of the winding operation, and means automatically to actuate said lever, after operation of the second feeler element, either when the rate of thread breakages reaches a predetermined value, when the thread leading from the supply bobbin is missing or when the. quantity of thread on the supply bobbin is insufficient to complete the winding of the take-up spool. In the arrangement shown breakage of the thread on the take-up side of tensioning device 62 permits the feeler 6 to pivot thus releasing the threearmed lever 311, 312, 309. This lever then releases the pawl 305 so that it engages the ratchet wheel 301 on shaft 36 thus causing rotation of discs 302 and 303 interconnected by sleeve 304 loosely mounted on shaft 36. Rotation of disc 302 brings pin 329 into contact with lever arm 331 which thus pivots about 330 and depresses the other arm 332. This arm 332 acts on three rods 333, 334 and 335 through springs 336, 337 and 338 the rods in turn acting on three levers 342, 343 and 344 pivoted on rod 345. Movement of lever 342 is prevented by a bi-metallic rod 348 having a heating coil 326 around it, this coil being connected in a circuit with contacts 328 and 324 which are engaged by the lever 321, 322 on rotation of disc 303. Should there be frequent thread breakages the heating effect of coil 326 is sufficient to disengage the rod 348 from lever 342 and thereby permit its movement under the action of rod 333. Again movement of lever 343 is permitted if the feeler 63 pivots due to the absence of thread on the supply side of tensioning device 62 and movement of lever 344 is permitted if there is insufficient thread on the supply bobbin 67 to complete a winding on spool as determined by the feeler 69. Movement of any one of the levers 342, 343, 344 rocks the bracket 346, 347 on rod 345 and releases the pawl 355 which then engages ratchet wheel 363 on shaft 357. This then causes rotation of discs 360 and 361 interconnected by sleeve 362 which initiate the operation of mechanism for changing the supply bobbin.
