771,672. Door-operating apparatus; fastenings operated from a distance. EAST LANCASHIRE COACH BUILDERS, Ltd., and ALCOCK, A. M. March 30, 1954 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 2173/53. Drawings to Specification. Classes 44 and 65 (1). Mechanism for opening and closing a sliding door of two sections, one of which moves at about twice the speed of the other so that they lie face to face when open, includes a double gear composed of two wheels connected or secured together, one of the wheels being of abont half the diameter of the other and each wheel engaging a rack on one of the door sections. In the arrangement described, each rack is formed by a length of chain lying on and secured at its ends to a bar supported by brackets on the corresponding door section; the bar on the faster-moving door section is slidable on the door section and has a lostmotion connection to the door section, and is also connected to a handle on the door whereby a latch is released and a switch controlling a reversible electric motor driving the double gear is actuated, the lost-motion connection providing that the door section is not moved from the closed position until the latch has been operated. Limit switches are provided.
