Abstract

771,368. Forming collars on the ends off hermoplastic tubes. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. April 6, 1955 [April 6, 1954], No. 10087/54. Class 87(2). To form a collar on a thermoplastic tube 7 it is placed within a tubular guide 3 and pushed out of the guide until it engages a pivotally mounted plate 12. The tube is held against longitudinal movement by a plate 6 which may be in the form of a knife to cut a tube from a length of tube 13. The end of the tube is heated by an electric heater 5. A shaping head comprising a pin 25, a plunger 27, and a collar 26 is then moved to the left, and as it is moved a plate 20 having a cam track 21, 22 causes the plate 12 to be turned through 90 degrees (see Fig. 2 (not shown)) to allow the pin 25 to enter the tube 7, the collar 27 to engage over an extension 10 on the guide 3 to form a mould space in which the tube end is compressed by the spring (32)-urged plunger 27 to form a collar. The heater is cut off before the shaping operation, and the shaped head 2 is retained in its operative position for a short time to allow cooling jackets 4 and 33 to set the material. As the shaping head is retracted, a pin 34 engages a pin 35 to eject the shaped tube. The operations of the machine may take place automatically by a switch operated by an extension of the cutter 6.
