Class 98(2) A 3-dimensional reproduction of a solid object is made by illuminating a strip of the surface of the object by a pair of opposed coplanar sheet-like beams, moving the object and beams relative to each other in a direction normal to the plane of the beams so that each strip of the object is illuminated in turn, photographing at least every alternate strip with a camera or one or other of a pair of opposed coaxial cameras to obtain records of the contours defined by said strips, and assembling the photographic records, or representations derived therefrom, one on top of the other to form a 3-dimensional reproduction. Each illuminated strip may be photographed, and the negative transparencies stacked to represent the object embedded in transparent material, or prints may be made and cut along ,the outer or inner of the two contours and the cut-outs stacked to represent the object. In the latter case it is necessary only to photograph alternate strips to obtain a record of each contour. A number of separated strips may be illuminated simultaneously by using more than one pair of coplanar beams. Alternatively a single pair of beams may be moved continuously, relative to the object, and a cine camera used to record the strip images. Additional beams or cameras may be necessary to record the recesses of a re-entrant surface. Specifications 298,377 [Class 98(ii)] and 439,776 are referred to.
