Abstract

In weaving an open-mesh fabric, the warp and filling yarns of the fabric are caused to adhere at their points of intersection to prevent yarn slip while leaving the mesh openings substantially unobstructed and the warp yarns still under loom tension. The fabric may be woven from yarns coated with thermoplastic adhesive and heated while on the loom, to cause adherence at intersections, or a woven fabric, while on the loom, may have the yarns impregnated and coated with adhesive, which is hardened to cause adherence. Suitable adhesives are synthetic rubber latices, e.g. neoprene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, natural rubber latex, solutions or emulsions of polyvinyl butyrate, melamine resins, polyvinyl acetate, or ethyl cellulose, liquid phenolic resins, or solutions of casein, starch, natural gums or glue. The fabric may be plain, twill, gauze or leno weave and of rayon, nylon, glass, cotton, linen, wool or asbestos, with single or multiple filament yarns. After impregnating, the fabric may be passed over an orifice which breaks films of adhesive closing the fabric meshes by blowing air, which may be heated, or steam therethrough. The fabric then passes under radiant heaters which harden the adhesive. The adhesive may, alternatively, be applied by spray, and may be hardened by hot air blowers or sprays of precipitant or hardening agent.
