Abstract

770,653. Laminated fabric belting. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 15, 1955 [March 1, 1954], No. 5949/54. Class 140. [Also in Group XI] A method of manufacturing strips of fabric 3, e.g. for belting, impregnated with a synthetic thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, comprises heating superimposed impregnated layers by high frequency dielectric heating to a temperature, e.g. 165‹ to 180‹ C., at which the polyvinyl chloride at least approaches liquefaction, and simultaneously subjecting the fabric to pressure between rollers 4, 6 to bond the layers, the fabric being then passed while still hot between heated calendering rollers 2. The rollers 4, 6 form the earthed and high potential sides respectively of the high frequency heater supplied from a source 1, the rollers 6 being spring-urged at 9. The rollers 4, 6 may be driven from an external drive, and a number of heaters may be positioned to heat the fabric 3 in stages, the rollers of the last heater being covered with a material, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, which mitigates sticking of polyvinyl chloride to the rollers.
