Abstract
Carbon dioxide is removed from hydrogen-containing gas obtained by interacting steam and methane, or from ammonia synthesis gas, by a two-stage absorption-desorption process, a major proportion of the carbon dioxide being removed in the first stage by scrubbing with a relatively large volume of an aqueous solution of potasium carbonate, preferably containing 30-40 per cent K2CO3 at a pressure of at least 90 p.s.i.g. and at a temperature of 240-270 DEG F. and regenerating the solution at a temperature within 50 DEG F. of the temperature during absorption and at a decreased pressure of not less than 10 p.s.i.g., the remaining portion of the carbon dioxide being substantially removed in the second stage by scrubbing with a relatively small volume of an aqueous solution of an alkanolamine, e.g. containing 40-60 per cent alkanolamine, at a temperature of e.g. 86-140 DEG F. and regenerating the solution by heating to e.g. 240-257 DEG F. The alkanolamine may be monoethanolamine. The potassium carbonate and alkanolamine solutions are regenerated in conventional way in regenerator towers provided with reboiler and condenser. A heat-exchanger and further cooler is provided in the alkanolamine solution circuit. A portion of the alkanolamine may be bled off and disstill with caustic soda, and then returned to the process. Residual carbon dioxide may be removed in a third stage by scrubbing the gas in a small tower with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
